Flare availability - restrictions

Aerial ignition flares are exclusively available to local, state, federal, and tribal agencies, or other entities directly supporting official fire management operations. These flares are not accessible to the general public. To confirm the intended use of the flares, we require an email from your agency's official email address before we can release them to you. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Drone (unmanned system) users deploying aerial ignition flares

For users intending to deploy aerial ignition flares from drones, we would like to inform you that traditional lug designs are available upon request. However, please note that we do not provide the release mechanism, as each drone platform is unique and requires a drop mechanism that is specifically tailored to its configuration. We are committed to collaborating closely with you to develop a release mechanism that meets your specific needs. Additionally, there are existing drop mechanisms developed by select drone manufacturers. If you would like, we can facilitate contact with those manufacturers to assist you further. Thank you for your interest, and we look forward to supporting your operational requirements.

Manned aircraft users deploying aerial ignition flares

For users intending to deploy aerial ignition flares from manned aircraft, we would like to clarify that no special mechanism or deployment apparatus is required for deployment from fixed or rotary wing aircraft. The flares can be effectively deployed from any altitude by hand; however, it is recommended that they be released from an altitude greater than 50 feet AGL (Above Ground Level) to ensure optimal performance and safety. We appreciate your commitment to responsible deployment practices and are here to support your operational needs.

Operational considerations

When deploying aerial ignition flares, please consider the following important factors:

  1. **Burn Temperature**: The flares are designed to burn at an impressive 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit, making them effective against stubborn ground fuels.
  2. **Surface Impact**: Care should be taken to avoid deploying flares onto logs, rocks, roadways, or other excessively hard surfaces from altitude. Impact with such surfaces may damage the flare and prevent the desired burn result.
  3. **Water Hazards**: Flares should not be deployed into streams, lakes, or other standing water, as they may not ignite in these environments.
  4. **Drop Testing**: The flares have been tested to withstand a minimum drop height of 8 feet. Any deployment from a height or impact that delivers less force than what is achieved from an 8-foot drop onto unpacked earth may not result in ignition.
  5. **Best Practices**: To maximize effectiveness, deploy flares at appropriate altitudes and ensure they are released onto suitable surfaces. By adhering to these considerations, you can enhance the effectiveness of the aerial ignition flares during your operations.

Safety considerations

The aerial ignition flares are equipped with a percussion primer, and it is crucial to follow the associated safety protocols to ensure safe handling and deployment. Please adhere to the following safety guidelines:

  1. **Do Not Drop or Abuse**: Handle the flares with care. Dropping inadvertently or abusing the device can lead to unintended ignition.
  2. **Avoid Unintended Ignition**: Do not expose the flares to flame or other ignition sources in environments where ignition is not intended.
  3. **Proper Use Only**: Do not attempt to imitate or use the flares in any manner for which they were not designed.
  4. **Fume Safety**: Avoid inhaling burning fumes that may be produced during deployment.
  5. **Physical Contact**: Do not come into physical contact with the contents of the flare.
  6. **Personnel Safety**: Do not drop or deploy flares near ground personnel or equipment.
  7. **Child Safety**: Keep flares away from children at all times.
  8. **Operator Responsibility**: These flares are made by operators for operators. They should only be used or handled by individuals who are trained or qualified to do so. By following these safety guidelines, you can help ensure a safe and effective operation when using aerial ignition flare.

Proposition 65, we hereby provide the following warning: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and/or birth defects or other reproductive harm. California requires that these flares include a Proposition 65 statement to ensure that users are informed of potential risks associated with their use. Please handle and use these flares in accordance with all safety guidelines and protocols to minimize exposure.
